What Your Student Will Experience
In our Costuming Course, students don’t just learn—they create.
Throughout the 1st semester (Aug-Nov 2026), students will learn the principles of sewing and storytelling through costuming. In our 2nd semester (Jan-April 2027), students will design and build costume pieces that are used in our final theatre production of James and the Voice, giving them real, hands-on experience as part of a production team.

Program Structure
Fall Semester (Auguest-November 2026)
Costuming Foundations (Meets Once Per Month)
Students begin by learning the fundamentals of costume design and construction through hands-on workshops. This semester provides the foundation needed to confidently contribute to a live theatre production.

- Sewing machine safety and basic operation
- Hand sewing techniques and common stitches
- Taking measurements and reading simple patterns
- Fabric types, tools, and materials
- The role of costumes in storytelling and character development
- Basic costume design principles and sketching
Why does the class meet once a month in the fall?
The Fall Semester is intentionally designed as a foundational workshop series, allowing students to build essential sewing and design skills before transitioning into the weekly production schedule in the spring. This structure gives students the confidence and experience needed to successfully costume a live theatrical production.

What Tuition Includes
Students in our Costuming Course gain hands-on experience designing and creating costume pieces used in our final showcase. Tuition includes instruction, tools, and production involvement, with a materials fee that covers fabric and supplies so every student can fully participate.

Students put their skills into practice by serving as the costume department for our spring theatre production, James and the Voice. Working alongside the Stage Acting students, they will help bring each character to life through thoughtful costume design and construction.

- Design and construct costume pieces for the production
- Alter and fit costumes for cast members
- Learn costume repair and backstage quick fixes
- Collaborate with the director and stage actors
- Organize costumes, accessories, and wardrobe inventory
- Prepare costumes for dress rehearsals and performances
- Gain real-world experience working as part of a theatre production team

Fall Session: August 6 – November 19, 2026: Technical and practical hands on learning
Spring Session: January 7 – April 9: Preparing and real world application
Final Theatre Presentation James and the Voice: April 10
Please note: Classes will not meet on federally recognized national holidays or during scheduled Chandler Unified School District for spring and fall school breaks.
*Additional rehearsal days may be scheduled during the final two months leading up to the Presentation.
